Advocate for Black maternal health. Support life-saving healthcare education every month.
80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. Black birthing families are disproportionately impacted due to racism in healthcare and society.
Your monthly donation equips Black communities with the knowledge and tools to achieve safer, trauma free, and respectful healthcare experiences.

Medical racism won’t be fixed from the top down
But the challenges we’re up against are significant: According to the CDC, discrimination contributes to 30% of maternal deaths.
And though maternal death rates in the U.S. declined in 2023, the rate of maternal deaths increased among Black mothers.
That means it’s up to us to confront racism in healthcare. But when faced with the stress of pregnancy and other life-changing events, Black birthing families often need guidance in dealing with challenging medical conversations.
Our solution is advocacy education, because knowledge is power—and in many cases, it is life-saving.
With your support, we can get the tools and information in front of those who need it most so they can more confidently navigate the healthcare system and take ownership of their health and well-being.
We envision a time when Black families are cared for with the respect and dignity that all people deserve.
From understanding treatment options, to comparing different models of maternity care, to finding doctors who take their concerns seriously, everyone deserves to be informed and empowered in their health decisions.
But too often, doctors don’t listen or harbor bias toward people they are supposed to serve. That’s why the Black Coalition for Safe Motherhood developed the ACTT curriculum we’ve offered in communities of color nationwide since 2019.
Our comprehensive healthcare advocacy programs offer practical skill-building to navigate pregnancy, birth, and beyond with confidence. Importantly, Black families use ACTT tools to mitigate the medical and obstetric racism so often encountered when seeking care and healing.
We won’t stop advocating until everyone is equipped to take charge of their care. With a recurring donation, you can become an Advocate, too.

Your monthly donation gives power to families
Your contribution will impact the lives of Black birthing families nationwide by providing them with:
Empowered health conversations
95% percent of ACTT Workshop participants report feeling more confident in communicating with medical professionals and taking charge of their care.
Improved healthcare experiences
When families are armed with the tools to advocate for themselves, they know how to assert their rights and partner with their providers for informed decision-making and person-centered care.
Higher standards, stronger communities
By championing the self-determination of growing families, we’re building a consumer movement for equitable maternity and medical services so the entire community can heal and thrive.

Healthcare advocacy has ripple effects in our communities – just ask Adrienne
“I’m excited that as an early educator I’m able to take the information you gave us back to the early childhood community. It’s so fundamental for parents to have this information not only to advocate for children, but also for themselves.
In my fifties, I’m learning to practice resistance in my own understanding of what it means to have personal agency within my body.
You’ve given us a framework and some amazing foundational tools to think through and process situations that come up, because health and healthcare are always evolving.”
